2014-2015 SLP Projects

This page lists the projects that will be developed during the fall 2014 and spring 2015 semesters. There were 97 students enrolled and 15 projects.

Hope's Legacy

Hope's Legacy is a horse rescue organization that saves equines from a variety of situations including, but not limited to: abuse, abandonment, neglect, slaughter or whose owners can no longer care for them.

The project is to develop a system that will have two parts: management of horses, and management of volunteers. The horse care part will help keep track of their medical care, feeding schedule, and location (as the horses move between stables). The volunteer management part will allow for easy scheduling of volunteer shifts, tracking of hours worked, and email notifications.

The Shelter for Help in Emergency

The Shelter for Help in Emergency 'works to support and empower victims of domestic violence through a combination of residential, community-based and outreach services'.

The project is to develop a web portal for volunteers to use that will enable easy scheduling of shifts, sign-up for events, notification to volunteers, and discussions between volunteers (said discussions are never about specific individuals seeking help from the nonprofit).

Madison House

Madison House is the volunteer coordination center for students at the University of Virginia. Over 3,000 students volunteer for one of 20 different program areas throughout the greater Charlottesville area.

The project is to develop a scheduling system that allows the program leaders to schedule their hundreds of volunteers to various volunteer sites and shifts based on scheduling criteria, such as shift availability or car availability.

Service Dogs of Virginia

Service Dogs of Virginia 'raises, trains, and places dogs to assist people with disabilities. Highly trained dogs perform a multitude of tasks that allow greater personal freedom and independence.'

The project is to develop a system to manage the training of the dogs, who have multiple daily training reports as well as weekly training evaluations. Trainers will enter short reports via their cell phones after working with a dog, and the entire staff will complete the weekly evaluations based on the results of the daily reports.

The Haven

The Haven 'works to end homelessness ... by incubating collaborative efforts across the system of care and operating a multi-resource day shelter for the homeless in downtown Charlottesville'.

The project is to develop a web portal for volunteers which will primarily allow for shift scheduling. Additional features will allow for tracking of donations, notifications, and first-time registration.

The Arbor Charlottesville

The Arbor Charlottesville 'provides long-term shelter and holistic aftercare services to adult female human trafficking survivors in Virginia, so that they may establish a community of healing and reclaim wholeness, freedom and life'.

The project is to develop a system that will help track the care provided to their clients, and provide a volunteer portal. No identifiable information about the clients will be entered into the system.

Alzheimer's Association, Central & Western Virginia Chapter

The Alzheimer's Association 'advances research to end Alzheimer's and dementia while enhancing care for those living with the disease'. The Central & Western Virginia chapter serves 37 counties.

The project is to develop a volunteer management system that will be the primary database for the 1,000 volunteers for the chapter, as well as provide a volunteer portal for those volunteers.

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports works with individuals with physical disabilities to help them learn to ski and snow bard.

The project is a system to manage the profiles of the students and instructors, allow for instructors to edit their information via a web portal, and perform scheduling of instructors to students.

Innisfree Village

Innisfree Village is a 'voluntary community with adults with intellectual disabilities, dedicated to providing a life sharing home and work environment in an atmosphere of beauty, warmth, and respectfulness'.

The project is to develop a system to manage the appointments that the residents need to attend, such as medical appointments. This allows the volunteers, who take the residents to these appointments, to better schedule their time.

WTJU 91.1 FM

WTJU 91.1 FM a non-commercial educational radio station, FCC licensed, at the University of Virginia.

The project is to develop a web portal that allows DJs to easily create play lists from their extensive music library. DJs can then use those play lists to play the music directly on the air. This project is for their sister station, WTJX, as well.

Loaves and Fishes of Charlottesville

Loaves and Fishes of Charlottesville 'provides groceries at no cost to low-income families within and around the Charlottesville community'.

The project is to develop a web portal for volunteers that will allow them, but especially the staff, to schedule volunteers to shifts, as well as keep track of volunteer hours.

Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Education

The Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Education (TJACE) has the goal to 'provide quality services, convenient access, and community partnerships to offer the best instruction to area adults in GED Preparation and English for Speakers of Other Languages, ESOL instruction.'

The project is to develop an online GED and ESL quiz tool. This will allow anybody to take practice GED or ESL test questions, and allow instructors of the classes that TJACE offers to have their students take class-assigned quizzes.

Charlottesville Municipal Band

The Charlottesville Municipal Band 'serves the communities of Charlottesville/Albemarle and surrounding counties, providing musical entertainment and education through free public concerts and representing the City and County at civic and other special events'.

The project is to develop a system to help manage their donations, thank-you letters, membership database, and other aspects of managing the people involved with (or donating to or volunteering for) the band.

JAUNT

JAUNT is a regional transportation system providing service to individuals with disabilities in the Charlottesville and surrounding areas.

The project is to create a real-time JAUNT bus tracker, as well as a client portal that will allow for managing of reservations online. In addition, a staff vacation request system will be included as well.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad

The Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, or CARS, 'provides primary rescue and emergency medical transport service to the City of Charlottesville, the University of Virginia and some of Albemarle County'.

The project is a system to manage the scheduling of shifts for the volunteers.
